the future of smart phones

the technology in smart phones seems to be improving by leaps and bounds due largely to advancements in processing power and faster networks. mobile devices are getting smaller, thinner, and faster. despite that, i have yet to find a mobile device and carrier network that is reliable and doesn’t consistently drop my calls. however, there are some incredible advancements that are on the way. here’s a sneak peek around the bend in the road.
displays - big changes lie ahead in cellphone display screens. currently, apple’s iphone display is one of the best in class with 326 pixels per inch. toshiba has a new model display with 367 ppi. the rumor mill is spinning that iphones (5) model will be the lucky recipient of the new display. the benefits to this are greater visual acuity and energy efficiency.
cameras - 8 megapixel cameras are pretty standard, but most of them take absolutely horrible pictures. the reason why the pictures you take with your phone are unrecognizable is because of poor lenses and focus technology. smart phones depend on their software to do the work of image stabilizers (compared to a camera) and also share the processing resources of apps and other programs running behind the scene. within the next year, compact camera models with better optics and imaging power will finally bring photography to mainstream phones.
data input - keyboards are becoming obsolete as better touchscreen interfaces have been developed. that’s a trend that will continue. as voice input technology improves, keyboards may eventually go the way of the dodo.
battery power - universal wireless charging will emerge as a standard feature on most phones with charging pads that juice up the phone upon contact.
